I got my 2016 Ford Transit in August of 2016 but my first road trip had to wait until I saw John Prine at Massey Hall on Saturday Sept. 10 (with Molly) and then in Hamilton the next night.
So on Monday Sept. 12 I left Toronto with Nick and my sister Mary for the east coast. We drove along the north shore of the St. Lawrence to Baie-Comeau and then turned north on Quebec 389. This route took us past the five massive hydroelectric facilities on the Manicouagan River. The river is frequently shortened to Manic so some of the dams are just called Manic 4 and Manic 5. Eventually after 587 km you arrive in Labrador City/Wabash and at a Wabash hotel you can pick up a free sat phone provided by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and returned to a hotel in Red Bay on the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The Trans-Labrador highway is now completely paved all the way to Happy Valley/Goose Bay on Melville Lake about 180 km from the coast. Highway 510 south is a 620 km meandering route that was only 60% paved to get to Blanc-Sablon on the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the ferry to the Great Northern Peninsula of NFLD.
I am glad I have been through Labrador but those are the only two major highways and they are routed for commerce and not tourists so it is actually not really scenic unless you really like taiga forest.
Since that first trip I have been to Yellowstone with Emma which included Badlands NP, Devil's Tower NP, Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills of Dakota.
A Habitat For Humanity build in Taos New Mexico with Bryan and Tammy with a tour of the American southwest to Zion NP, Arches NP, Grand Canyon NP, Vegas, Hoover Dam, Canyonlands NP, Route 66, Monument Valley, Breaking Bad's Albuquerque and Mammoth Cave NP.
Excellent trip to Yosemite NP that included Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Seattle, Pacific Coast Highway south to Big Sur, Napa Valley, Death Valley NP, Mojave Desert, Sierra Nevada mountains, Reno, Lake Tahoe, Sequoia NP, Kings Canyon NP and the Bonneville Salt Flats.
In April I drove Daly, Damien, Keegan and Rory to Hilton Head SC and then met Murdoch in Florida where we did an airboat tour of the Everglades, Key West and saw a SpaceX rocket launch.
Now on to NWT, Yukon and Alaska!
